The Jackbox Survey Scramble is an upcoming survey party video game. The game consists of four game modes, all of which involve players responding to questions with a one-word answer that are submitted to an online database.
It is the first Jackbox party game to be localized for the UK and Australia.
It is scheduled to be released on October 24th, 2024[1][2]—a demo version was made available during Steam Next Fest from October 14th to October 21st.[3]
Gameplay
The Jackbox Survey Scramble consists of six game modes, all of which are chosen by the host in the lobby:
- Hilo (pronounced "high-low"): In this mode, players try to guess the most popular and least popular answers. After four tries, the mode ends with players guessing which one of two answers is ranked higher on the list.
- Speed: In this mode, players try to guess as many answers on the list as possible before time runs out.
- Squares: In this mode, players divide into two teams and compete to claim three squares in a row on a grid, similar to Tic Tac Toe. The most popular choices (1-2, 3-5, 6-10) are in the top three squares, while the semi-popular choices (11-15, 16-20, 21-30) are in the middle three squares, and the least popular choices (31-50, 51-70, 71+) are in the bottom three squares.
- Bounce: In this mode, players divide into two teams, who control a paddle that sits on a scale between the most popular-to-least popular answers. Players work with their team to guess an answer that puts their paddle in the right place to intercept a bouncing ball and stop their opponents from scoring a goal—the more answers they guess, the faster the speed of the ball. The team that scores 5 points first wins.
Two additional game modes were revealed on November 14th[4], and were added in an update released on December 13th[5]:
- Dash: In this mode, players compete against each other in a race, and must find the most popular answer from a large list of options to move ahead. Players have an option to double down on their choice for more progress (or more punishment), or send extra choices to their opponent's list to slow them down. The player who reaches the finish line first wins. Track length can be adjusted in the settings.[5]
- Dares: In this mode, players control whether a fellow player must guess something higher or lower on the list than what's just been revealed.
There are also two additional gameplay options available in the lobby:
- Pick for Me: The game picks one random game mode.
- Tour: The game plays through every game mode in a row. After all the modes have been played through, the game automatically ends the session.
After each game mode ends, the player who wins that round gains a star. Once players have played at least one game mode, an option to end the game is available, Goodbye, which ends the session.
The Jackbox Survey Scramble also contains a setting for "Drop In Drop Out", where (when enabled) players can join and leave in the lobby between game modes.
Development
The Jackbox Survey Scramble was announced on September 26th, 2024, following a series of one-word surveys that the studio had been running for a few months.[6]
A demo version of the game that only contained two game modes (Hilo and Squares) was available to play during Steam Next Fest from October 14th to the 21st.[3]
On December 13th[5], an update was released that added two new game modes (Dash and Dares), as well as some new gameplay settings:
- The ability to vote to play additional rounds in Hilo and Dares
- Scrambled and "Three Strikes" options in Squares
- An unlimited mode (which disables the timer) in Speed
- The ability to fine-tune the ball speed and acceleration (as well as skip the practice session) in Bounce
- The ability to disable point splitting in Hilo
The update also offered some stability improvements and bug fixes.
