Push the Button is a social deduction party video game and one of five games featured in The Jackbox Party Pack 6.

Gameplay

The players are given one of two roles at the start of game: either Human or Alienand these roles must be kept secret amongst them. The humans will only receive the message of them being a human, whilst aliens, if in a room with more than 4 players, will earn info on who their other fellow aliens are.

After everyone has confirmed their roles, a captain is picked at random, which will then have them pick other players to be put in one of these five tests:

  • Drawing Quarters: All selected players are given a prompt to draw within the alloted time. Aliens will be given a prompt that's either adjacent or unrelated to the original prompt.
  • Writing Pod: All selected players are given a specific prompt that they'll have to formulate an answer to. Aliens will be given a prompt that's either adjacent or broader than the original prompt.
  • Opinion Hold: All selected players are given a statement on their device of which they'll have to pick whether they "Strongly or Slightly Disagree" or "Slightly or Strongly Agree" with it. Aliens will be given a prompt that's either adjacent, the opposite, or completely unrelated to the original prompt.
  • Deliberation Deck: All selected players will be given a random scenario with three different options, of which they'll have to pick the one that they think is best for that prompt. Aliens are only given the options without the context of the original prompt.
  • Bioscanner: All selected players will be presented with a board with eleven glyphs on their screen. The captain will have to describe the three glyphs that are on their device as accurately as they can, then the players will try to decypher which glyphs need to be chosen. Aliens can try to sabotage by purposefully picking incorrect glyphs, but they can too pick the correct glyphs if they so desire.

Once all tests have been submitted:

  • For the first four tests, the players' prompts are shown to everyone, then everyone votes for the answer they think is the most suspicious.
  • For the Bioscanner, if the scan is unsuccessful, the players' highlighted glyphs are shown, and people vote for the most suspicious one, as stated above. However, if the scan succeeds, the Captain can pick any player to be put in the scanner; the Captain will then receive info on whether the player is a Human or an Alien, and they can share it if they so desire.

Whilst the Captain is selecting a test and their players or the players are doing their tasks, the other players can hit the "Hurry Up!" button, which accelerates the amount of time given. The more people who press it, the faster the time goes.

Now, all Aliens are given two hacks apiece, which they can use to give a human an alien prompt; alternatively, they can give a hack to themselves or another fellow alien in order to give them a human prompt. An Alien can hack two people at the same time, but they won't be able to use any more hacks after that.

If the team is sure who the aliens are, one of the players can push the button on their device and send them to the Extraction Room. Once in this room, the player who pushed said button has the choice to pick which player/s they would want to put in the chamber. Then a vote is held up, for which they can either say Yes or No:

  • If all of the players unanimously vote Yes, then the vote passes and the selected players and ejected out of the spaceship.
  • If even one of the players says No, then the vote fails and all of the players, including the ones in the chamber, will come back to the spaceship, with a new captain being dealt.

Once all of the players vote unanimously, all of the selected players' roles are revealed:

  • If all of the players who've been selected were Aliens, then the Humans win the game.
  • However, if at least one of the selected players is a Human, then the alien(s) left in the spaceship will eject the remaining Humans, and therefore, the Aliens will win the game.

Development

The design team for the game are as follows:

Trivia

  • Whilst the players are taking the tests, two of D.O.D.E's lines mention how Patently Stupid and Word Spud were "deleted from the database" in order to run said test.
