Word Spud (stylized as WORD SPUD) is a word association party video game and one of five games featured in The Jackbox Party Pack.
Gameplay
One player is randomly selected and presented with a randomly selected "prefix" (like "light-" or "super-," for example,) and they have to form a full word or sentence with it ("lighthouse" or "super great",) then everyone else votes on it, whether giving a YES or a NO. Points are added for the players voting for YES, and are subtracted for players voting NO.
If a majority of people vote for "YES," then the addition to the word that the previous player is given to the next randomly selected player (in this case, "house" and "great" would be sent to the next player;) however, if the majority votes "NO," then a new prefix is presented to the next player.
This cycle continues until the timer at the top ends. At which point, the player/s with the most points will earn a star and will be presented with the option of going to the next round or ending the game.
Development
Word Spud originally started as a Flash game in 2004 as an open beta by Jellyvision, then released in 2006. The game only supported 4 players, including adding or removing bots into the game, and the rules stayed the same. You could also adjust the amount of words, the speed of the words, and the amount of minutes in total.[citation needed]
The original game was also accompanied with a song, which was once revealed at the start of a Party Pack 1 Word Spud stream on their official Twitch account, which was archived on their YouTube in 2014.[1] The lyrics went like this:
When a word is passed to your name...
Type a word or a phrase that relates to it.
And then you hit Return, then the other players vote
And if they like what you say, then you'll feel so gay
Cuz you just made a Wordspud, hey!
Word Spud!
